  4.     Sports-mad South Africans have been desperate for
  5. world-class competition since international sporting bodies
  6. began banning them 25 years ago and vowed not to readmit them
  7. until apartheid was abolished. With the news two weeks ago that
  8. a "rebel" English cricket team would play two tours in South
  9. Africa, most of the country's whites rejoiced.

  11.     Elsewhere, the reaction was outrage. Britain's
  12. antiapartheid movement demanded that the rebel players be banned
  13. forever. Sports Minister Colin Moynihan advised them not to go,
  14. and Tanzanian Foreign Minister Benjamin Mkapa warned that
  15. African nations might boycott the 1990 Commonwealth Games.

  17.     Under heavy pressure, the two black members of the 16-man
  18. squad pulled out. The others, led by captain Mike Gatting, seem
  19. intent on going, no doubt spurred by fees of up to $160,000
  20. reportedly offered by the South African Cricket Union.
